Happy 1st Birthday Landon!

One year ago at 12:40 p.m., Landon Parker Garrett entered the world weighing a whopping 9 lbs. 4 oz. From the beginning when I found out I was pregnant with him, things were smooth and I had an easy pregnancy. When you read about different temperaments in babies, he is the classic "angel" baby. He is just so sweet that he rarely makes a fuss. In fact, the way I know he is sick is when he cries a little. At 6 weeks old, he had his first bout with RSV right in time for his first Halloween. Then, he started having chronic ear infections beginning at 3 months. In the spring, he had another bout with RSV and for a while, it seemed he was sick more than he was well but you wouldn't really know it because he was still all smiles. He is just so happy and content and he has been such a blessing to our family. He truly has added so much joy to our family and it just blesses my heart seeing Grant and Peyton interact with him in their own unique ways but also seeing him light up when he sees them.

A lot has happened in this past year but it is hard to believe that Landon turned one today! As much as we try to cherish these baby stages with him, it is flying by so I'm so thankful that I have kept a list of my favorite memories of him over the past year because as I read back over them, there are many that seem like very distant memories and some of them seem like yesterday. In some ways, it does seem like yesterday that he was born. I will never forget the first time I got to see and hold him. His skin was truly the softest skin I've ever touched or kissed. Then, there was all of that peach fuzz on his back. I forgot about his cute little snoring habit in the hospital until I read back through my comments. Then, there were his unique sneezes where he would sneeze and it would always be followed by an "ah" sound. Those first cries sounded more like a little squeak like a mouse instead of a loud scream. Another favorite was seeing his little legs curl up and he would roll up in a ball when we would pick him up out of the crib or his car seat. He was such a a good cuddle buddy! I can still picture one of Landon's biggest first smiles on November 11, 2008 that he gave to Peyton.

Then, he had this unique wrinkle that resembled his Nana Carol's literally minutes after he was born. It always made us laugh because when we would talk to him, he would wrinkle that forehead like he was trying to figure out what we were saying and then he would always follow that look by flashing a big smile when he learned how to smile at 6 weeks. I remember the first time we noticed he was ticklish was on December 6, 2008 and he just gave a big belly laugh whenever we touched his chin. Of course, seeing his smile which just lights up his entire face will always be a favorite memory but those smiles behind the paci are fun ones too because he smiles so big he almost loses the paci.

One unique habit that he started on January 11, 2009 was putting his hands over his eyes when he was trying to go to sleep. It was always so precious seeing those sweet hands covering his eyes whether he was asleep in his car seat or crib. In March, he started the habit of putting his toes in his mouth. Now this won't always be something that is cute but to see a baby doing it looked cute. :)

At 9 months, he started initiating playing games and we saw more of his personality coming out. I can remember one game where he would give a big smile when someone would talk to him and then bury his head in my shoulder like he was hiding and then he would look back up and wait for them to say something else at which time he would bury his head again.

I always look forward to going into his room to get him up from sleeping because I'm greeted with a huge smile and then he stands up, holds on to his crib, and starts bouncing up and down with excitement. His joy is truly contagious! While he has a very easy going temperament, he is very physically strong. I can still remember those strong kicks that he game me when I was pregnant. Then, after he was born, his doctor and nurses would comment on how strong his grip was for a newborn and he has only grown stronger. Diaper changes resemble something more like wrestling an alligator. While I wish time would slow down a little more as we try to cherish all these moments, I know God has wonderful plans for Landon and I believe he will continue growing into a strong, happy boy and I look forward to many more memories in the years to come!
