Each week, we focus on a letter of the week, number of the week and for Grant, math concept, Bible verse that they memorize for the week, and so on. It sounds so boring but almost everything that we do involves some type of hands-on learning or game to teach the concept and we sing lots of songs and dance to learn new concepts or even a Bible verse.
Right now we are reviewing all the letters and doing various hands-on activities and crafts along with centers, science, math, and for Grant, reading. At times, I teach both of them at the same time and then I will take individual time with each of them to teach to their level. While I'm working with one child, I will have the other one at a reading center (listening to a book on tape) if it is during reading/phonics time and if it is during math time, I have some individual games that they play while I work with the other one. What does Landon do during this time? I mix it up for him...he will have a little pack-n-play time with toys, free play time to play with toys I've brought downstairs for him, play time with me while the boys are working on their work, playtime with one of his brothers, and then I'll buckle him in a booster seat at the table to do table activities like puzzles and blocks when we are at the table.
Here is a typical routine for us....
Grant and Peyton sit at their seat and do the work in their folder. It is usually one workbook page and during this time, I play with Landon (seatwork is usually a review activity for them that doesn't require my help)
Calendar Time
Circle Time/Story Time
Phonics Activity/Craft
Free Play Time
Reading Time/Reading Center
Thematic Unit topic activities
Math
*Depending on how long an activity takes, I may add a center in (like a building block, music, drawing, etc) or more free play time.
F Activities:
Day where they were a farmer and we planted seeds...
Making a farm and animals with play doh. They had to think about everything they would find on a farm and create it out of play doh.
Planting seeds
Snack...fly pie (vanilla pudding with chocolate chips)
Math Lesson with Fly Pie (count out the number of chocolate chips and add to the pudding. Have them write this number down. Then, put a few more. We did an addition and subtraction lesson during snack by adding chocolate chips and then eating them)
Making Fanny the Frog
We do a letter art gallery. For the Capital F, they did footprints and the lower case f, they did fingerprints.
Making fat fish. I cut out the pattern and they painted it and then we stuffed the inside with newspaper and hung them from the ceiling.
Site Word Relay (after learning site words, I put the cards in a pile and Grant will race to get them. If he gets the word right, he keeps the card. If not, he has to run back without a card. He keeps doing this until he gets all the cards. The same can be done with teaching letters b/c I do this for Peyton)
Center: Peyton creating a pattern using screws and his drill.
Thematic unit: Tools we use in our environment. The boys went on a scavenger hunt and collected tools that make our life easier (scissors, pens, etc). Then, we measured them and grouped them by short, tall, tallest. Peyton loves to measure!!!
Reading Center
Peyton's Letter Matching Game
Landon having fun in his "house"
Booster seat time
Writing letters on the white board. Because Peyton loves markers so much, this activity is fun for him, but I will quiz him on his letters but writing it on this lined white board and then, I'll say a letter and he will write it. We will speed it up or slow it down which he thinks is funny.
Number relay. They had to run and get a number and shout it while they ran back and tagged the other person. If they didn't get it right, they had to leave the number there.
Library Fun. This is actually Landon's class but Grant and Peyton loved it too.
Music time at the library
G Activities:
We made different shades of green for the "G" art gallery. They painted G in different shades on the uppper case and a g in different shades on the lower case.
The boys took their "garbage cans" and went on a scavenger hunt for items that began with "G." Peyton found golf balls and a giraffe.
Making gingerbread man cookie. Then, they decorated them with icing.
H Activities:
We did handprints on the "H" for the letter art gallery.
Making paper mache hats
Painting and decorating their hats
Landon playing at his learning table while the boys have their morning seatwork.
I'll post more on our I activities. We are in the process of building an igloo and doing some ice painting.
